My Nan, who came to England from Jamaica, embodies the resilience and cultural pride of her generation. Through her stories, traditions, and values, I stay connected to my heritage, recognizing the strength and perseverance that helped shape the Black British experience.
As a DJ, music becomes a vital tool for celebrating this heritage. Caribbean music, particularly reggae and dancehall, has had a profound influence on British music and culture. I stay connected by attending huge events such as Nottinghill Carnival and by incorporating these genres into my sets. I not only pay homage to my nan’s generation but also highlight the excellence and influence of Black musicians who have shaped global soundscapes and those new to the scenes.
Through my DJing, I can create sets that touch base on the music my nan grew up with as a lot of my generation would have grown up listening to such music. A big achievement connected that has best reflected this is hosting 2 successful events/parties whereby the aim is to promote community, music and enjoyment.
